Metaphorum 2024 Conference

Creativity and Viability

16 17 September 2024

Berlin, Germany

The Metaphorum 2024 Conference is set to take place in Berlin, Germany. This will be a two-day event from Monday September 16th to Tuesday September 17th.

This year’s conference theme centres around the role of creativity in sustaining viability. The primary conference activities are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, to be held at The Change Hub, an innovative space dedicated to creating sustainable transformation and social impact.

In keeping with the theme of the conference, this will be an innovative experience, unlike any other Metaphorum conference you have attended.

Our concept

Our ambition is to create an interactive experience where presentations and opportunities to exchange ideas and interact are nicely balanced.

The conceptual pillars:

  1. We start with a marketplace – discover ideas and meet new people!
  2. We use liberating structures to connect the participants!
  3. Poster presentations – no PowerPoint!
  4. The participants vote on the presentations : the Top 3  will be on stage as a plenary – others in break-out rooms  !
  5. Together we create a digital knowledge graph, documenting the conference in real time!

The three plenary sessions

Metaphorum 2024: The Viability Canvas
Using the VSM to design Governance Stuctures
Metaphorum 2024: Application Research for the Viable System Model

Location

Change Hub

Hardenbergstraße 32

Creativity In Sustaining Viability

Creativity requires both originality and effectiveness to solve problems in a novel way, achieving a desired result.

Creativity is not limited to artistic domains, but also occurs in the fields of science, technology, or business.

Products of creativity can go beyond tangible objects and may range from abstract actions such as communication and the development of new understandings, to concrete results such as more efficient operation or improved processes, structures or systems.

In the course of the conference we want to explore the role of creativity in creating and sustaining viability.

Structure of the Conference

We can host about 20 presentations during the conference due to the possible break-out sessions. All presentations will be featured as a poster presentation (format: DINA A0 or something similar in size, ca. 85cm × 120cm). You may also make creative use of this requirement, e.g., by printing a graphical illustration, bringing a physical model, or by drawing a sketch on a piece of brown paper (which we have anyways onsite – you could even draw it in the last minute). Additionally, you could come up with a foldable cardboard solution or connect smaller sheets of paper to a poster – the choice is yours!

During the marketplace you will get the chance to promote your poster presentation and encourage the other participants to vote for it. But don’t worry if you are not in the Top 3! Every selected entry will get a presentation slot during the breakout sessions. The higher the interaction rate, the better.

Time schedule of a breakout session

  • 30 minutes presentation (no more!)
  • 30 minutes interactive session with the participants (involve!)

Selection criteria

  • How is your presentation related to “Creativity and Viability”?
  • What are the top insights/ideas/messages that you want to share?
  • Breakout session: How do you want to engage with the participants in your session?

Timeline

  • Starting Call for Participation: 01.04.2024
  • Closing Call for Participation: 01.07.2024
  • Selection of presentations: 15.07.2024

Publications

Independent on whether your presentation is selected during the conference, academic papers developing further the topic presented at the conference are welcomed! We will produce a special issue in a systems or cybernetics journal with the best papers from the conference. There will be a 4 months period to complete the paper after the conference, including inputs from the conversations. Click here to submit your application!
