We are looking forward enthusiastically to meeting everyone in Manchester at the beginning of July for the Metaphorum 2025 Conference. Registrations and abstracts are coming in from different countries and perspectives. We are having a very good response to the call for participation.
Following our last conference in Berlin 2024, we want to continue innovating in our conference design and approach, keeping the spirit of creativity, participation and engagement. This year, we invite you to attend in person or online to share your questions, perspectives, and ideas about challenges and innovations to organisational cybernetics and systems theories, in the current socio economic, environmental and technological contexts.
You can either submit an abstract and make a presentation, or suggest a workshop to engage with other participants in a topic of your choice, related to the conference themes.
Artificial Intelligence is developing at a somewhat overwhelming rate and Metaphorum already has two teams working on this issue. The first theme of the conference VSM meets AI, will give us the opportunity to bring these strands together with many new perspectives, and to look at the implications.
The second theme, resilient and viable systems, delves into the critical intersection of viability and resilience. We shall explore ways in which the VSM can inform the design and management of resilient organisations in both business and society. We welcome both empirical and theoretical insights to further illuminate these areas.
In the third theme, new directions for developing VSM and Team Syntegrity, we are inviting VSM academics, consultants and practitioners, to share experiences in applying the VSM and Team Syntegrity (TS) in innovative fields or testing new methodological approaches and tools to guarantee qualitative VSM practice. We’d also like to hear about multidisciplinary ways to apply the VSM and TS, new methodological tools, or demonstrations of new scope for VSM and TS applications.
We are pleased to welcome VSM students from the UK Systems apprenticeship schemes, and also our newly certified VSM coaches, to share their learning and practice applying the VSM.
We will offer a VSM Masterclass led by VSM experts (M Pffifner, A Espinosa and others t.b.c.) to discuss practical applications of the VSM and any theoretical or methodological questions arising from practice, aiming to encourage a global community of VSM practitioners.
We will also offer an introductory workshop to Team Syntegrity, led by Allenna Leonard, where participants who would like to learn about Team Syntegrity and experience its approach would be welcomed.
About online participation
This year’s Metaphorum conference was being designed as a hybrid event so that people who can’t travel for whatever reason can still get involved.
However, when we undertook a test at the venue, technical difficulties made it difficult for on-line participants to hear clearly what was going on in the room, or to fully participate in ongoing discussions.
As an online participant you can give a presentation and engage with the participants' questions. You can also attend other speakers' presentations and ask questions in the chat to the speaker (we will have an online moderator).
We are aiming for as high a degree of participation as possible, but opportunities for discussions on-line will inevitably be more limited than we would have liked. For this reason we have reduced the price for on-line participation to £50.
If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here: metaphorum2025-registration
If you’re planning to send us an abstract please do it soon so we can finalise the agenda for the conference.
